Free AI book writing software: what can you actually finish?
A free plan, a limited trial and a free document editor solve different problems. Check what you can write, review and export before you commit your book.

"Free AI book writer" can mean three different things: a continuing free plan, a time-limited trial, or a free editor that has no built-in AI writing. A useful comparison must separate them. We build Chaptora and checked the other providers' own pages on 26 September 2026.

What exactly does free Chaptora Octavo include?#
Octavo gives you one Project with chapters, three research Sources of up to 5 MB each, access to AI features with limited usage, version history, and PDF export with a Chaptora cover page. The AI writes in the manuscript, and edits can be reviewed before you accept them. That makes it a practical way to test whether source-grounded drafting and an approval step suit your writing.
The restrictions matter. A long research book will quickly exceed three Sources. The Octavo PDF includes the cover page, and EPUB export is reserved for Quarto and Folio. The pricing page shows the current plan details. Do not choose Octavo expecting to produce an unbranded paperback interior from its free export.
When is Reedsy Studio the better free option?#
Reedsy says its core writing and formatting are completely free. Its Studio page lists a chapter sidebar, collaboration, EPUB output and a print-ready PDF with trim size settings. That is unusually strong if your draft is already written and your immediate problem is layout. Its product page does not list a built-in AI co-writer for the manuscript as of 26 September 2026. You can pair it with a separate AI tool, but you will manage the transfer between them.
What about ChatGPT Free and Google Docs?#
OpenAI describes ChatGPT Free as a continuing free tier with chat and some tools subject to limits. It is good for testing a premise, outlining chapters and revising a paragraph. Google Docs remains a usable free document editor. Google's Gemini in Docs page says Gemini is included for Workspace plan subscribers. The availability of an AI feature can vary by account and plan, so check your own account before calling a "Google Docs + Gemini" setup free. Docs can still hold your draft while you use another AI service.
Which advertised free tools are actually trials?#
Novelcrafter offers a 21-day trial and a strong fiction Codex for characters, places and lore. Sudowrite offers a free trial of its fiction-focused writing tools; its pricing page then lists paid subscriptions. Neither vendor page reviewed for this guide lists a continuing free AI writing plan. A trial is useful for a controlled test, but plan for where the manuscript will live afterward.
How should you choose a free starting workflow?#
Write a real chapter, not a demo prompt. Add one source, request a revision, inspect the change, then export a sample. If you need AI beside the text, start with Octavo. If layout is the main task, try Reedsy Studio. If you only want to experiment with ideas, a free chatbot may be enough until the book structure becomes the problem.

Both are worth testing for fiction, but a trial should not be mistaken for an ongoing free workspace for your manuscript.
